Whale Watching

January is a perfect time for whale watching around Puerto Vallarta as it coincides with the peak of the humpback whale migration. They travel from the cold waters of the Arctic to the warm, sheltered bays of the Pacific coast of Mexico to breed and give birth. The calm waters of Banderas Bay, and the ideal weather conditions at this time of year, make make it a perfect location, and a prime time for whale watching. During January, you can expect to see humpback whales engaging in various behaviors such as breaching, tail-slapping, and nurturing their young calves.

During our stay we will embark on daily excursions in a panga ( a small, sturdy, open fishing boat commonly used in coastal areas) to look for these gentle giants. We will be out on the water for up to 3 hours per session enhancing our chances of a whale encounter.

Banderas Bay is also a prime location for seeing dolphins and mobula rays. Dolphins, particularly bottlenose and spinner dolphins, are frequently seen year-round in the bay and mobula rays, also known as devil rays, are known for their spectacular aerial displays. While sightings are less predictable than those of dolphins, January is a good time to potentially see these rays.

Disclaimer: as with everything in nature, nothing is 100% predictable and there is no guarantee that you will see a whale, but our experienced crew will do the very best they can to find them.
